Crampons and bread dipped in hot Marmite drink

Victoria Park, Newbury 7th Jan 2009

Well I never thought I’d see a weather forecast for Newbury  for the next 5 days with temperatures anywhere between zero (maximum) and minus seven degrees! It looks like the five to twelve inches of snow we’ve got isn’t going anywhere fast!

So drastic measures may be needed. Probably full mountaineering crampons are a bit OTT, but these YakTrax look enticing, after a few near misses with slips despite wearing my expensively procured full-on country boots.

I’ve already been in porridge and honey mode for a few days. But today I tried something which a country friend of mine advised for really cold days: bread dipped in Hot Bovril or Marmite drink. It really is fantastic, especially if you allow the bread to get really soaked.

Quidams night time street performance in Newbury today

My video from a magical street performance in the dark in Newbury today. It was “Reve d’Herbert” by Quidams. It was great to see a vast crowd enjoying the performance as it made its way up Northbrook Street and finished in the Market Place.

"Up yours" message?

Newbury railway station is festooned with red “Home of Vodafone” signs and Vodafone advertising hoardings.

This morning I noticed this posterboard (below) just outside the station. I haven’t got a clue what it is about. Well, I understand the individual words but I am not quite sure what I am supposed to do about it. I am not aware of any Siemens Nokia Network products I can buy as a consumer. Perhaps I should be. You need, I suspect, to be a communications industry insider to understand it. Is there some sort of subliminal message contained within it?

Who'd be a brass band player in the rain?

Last Sunday we braved the persistent rain and went for a walk in Victoria park, Newbury. Rather perversely we decided, sitting under umbrellas, to listen to a few tunes from Basingstoke Silver Band, who had the misfortune to be the band scheduled for the day. You have to hand it to them – the band…er….played on. We enjoyed it.

Cllr Kuldip Singh Kang becomes Mayor of Newbury

Many congratulations indeed to Councillor Kuldip Singh Kang on being elected as Mayor of Newbury today.

Well done to him for inspiring a wonderful Civic Service at St Nicolas church this morning. Credit is also due to Reverend Paul Cowen (the Mayor’s chaplain) and to Reverend David Stone, Rector of St Nics, for facilitating such a mixed and uplifting service. It was marvellous to see members of the local Sikh community in the church, as well as the participation of so many children and ordinary members of the St Nics congregations, enjoying their favourite hymns such as “Shine Jesus Shine”.

Dr Jaspal Singh Sagoo read an extract from the Guru Granth Sahib which spoke about the need for selflessness in the service of others. That was quite topical.
