Sexy MP – stop this stomach-churning, pernicious nonsense
I’ve deleted a post from last night which was intended, I now realise obviously misguidedly, to ridicule the latest Sexy Mp website.
I totally agree with Caron’s post here.
Young people’s political ambitions are, almost invariably, shaped by role models. Shirley Williams followed Lady Astor, for example. Those role models should be held up for their passion and views, not “looks”.
It really is appallingly demeaning and pernicious to focus on the (highly dubious) presumed attractiveness of MPs. Many of the “high scorers” have very questionable views, for example.
I am sorry I misguidedly try to ridicule the website. It is ridiculous.

Hi Paul
I know that there is no way that you would have thought this website was good and I hope that I wasn’t too scary with the comment I left on the original post.
Ridiculing the site is a perfectly legitimate thing to do, but I think it’s also important to focus on the harm these things can do. One young woman has been scared out of politics because she was so upset about comments written about her on a similar site. That’s why I feel so strongly about it.
It’s the site that’s wrong – and I don’t want you to feel bad about your reaction to it, because you are spot on most of the time.
And I’ve just seen you’ve been quoted on the BBC News website – which is the second most popular article on it:-).
How very liberal of you to condemn free expression and deem the site wrong only hours after finding it funny. Some people understand this humour and some don’t. Either way, any attempt to “stop this stomach-churning, pernicious nonsense” is just as morally ‘wrong’ as encouraging it in my opinion.
I was ridiculing it. That is different from finding it funny old chum.
I think you may be over-reacting. An entreaty to people to voluntarily desist is not illiberal. I’m not Ofcom.
I wasn’t condemning free expression. I was critiquing a website. That in itself is part of free expression.
