The corner and Sarah Palin – keep painting lady!
We know that Sarah Palin put out a video complaining about a “blood libel” in connection with the Tucson shootings. But who exactly did “blame” Sarah Palin for the tragedy in the first place?
You can read a list in the Online National Review . If you take out the ones who commented after the video, it’s 4 pundits, one US Representative, one county sheriff, a New York Daily News headline writer and Jane Fonda on Twitter.
Given that Gabby Giffords was listed on the Palin Facebook page with a “Cross hairs” over her district in connection with healthcare reform, it is not surprising that some sort of link was made. Indeed, a survivor of the Tucson shootings, Eric Fuller, has also made that link.
It really is extraordinary that the response of a failed Vice-Presidential candidate and half-term governor of a sparsely populated state put out a Facebook video which ranked alongside the Presidential address at the Memorial Service. ….Only in America.
I’ve also watched Obama’s speech on the tragedy. It was a Memorial Service speech. They do Memorial Services differently in the US. -A vast arena with screaming, applause and cheering. Despite that, Obama’s speech was remarkably dignified as well as comprehensive and inspiring. It seems to have captured the moment. Even Grumpa Grouch, John McCain, has praised him for it.
Compare the two speeches, as perhaps Sarah Palin means us to by the timing of the video release, and the contrast is extreme.
One can’t help but feeling that Palin’s video was particularly targetted at firing up her base. References to prayer and “blood libel” were obviously carefully calculated.
Jim Jordan, a Democratic consultant, put it very well when he said:
Every time she pops off, she excites her narrowing band of partisans and probably makes herself more money, but she further alienates everyone else.
Whatever else the video did, it didn’t obviously appeal to the soft Democrats and Independents who Palin will have to win over to win the Presidency.
Indeed, this video culminates several months of dire polling for Palin, with a growing band of senior Republicans criticising her. That culminated with a spat with Barbara Bush, the Queen Mother of America.
And this week there is evidence that Palin is polling badly in all the states needed to her lift her off in the Republican Primary Season.
I can’t see now that Palin has a cat in hell’s chance of winning the Republican nomination. (But then I’ve said that before and then retracted my view.) Perhaps she will run as an Independent. Perhaps she will just forget the 2012 race and cash in on books and media appearances.
I have no real idea. But she will surely continue to entertain and enrage in equal measure, while she inspires a remarkably narrow base.
In the meantime, quietly and without media frenzy, President Barack Obama is rebounding and either steadying or on the up in the polls as Americans’ perception of the economy improves.
