When a leading blogger (and the MSM) really mess up
Well, he’s been leading up to it for a long time but this time Guido has really shown his true colours for all to see….
Let’s step back a bit – as they say.
One of the “life skills” which I have acquired is living through (a) losing a child and (b) ten years of trying for children.
These are the sort of “life skills” which make one a “grown up”.
Making cheap shots at someone in a general fog of homophobia does not make one a “grown up”.
It is valid to question the appointment of an alleged friend as a special advisor. It is highly distasteful to do that in such a way that encourages 300 comments per post, most of which are disgustingly homophobic in the extreme. But, as Stephen Tall wisely says, let’s not give Guido too much quodos. The Mail’s and the Telegraph’s printing of a year old – yes it was a year old, James Landale – photo was the thing which brought the whole sordid mess to a crescendo.
Yes, the MSM and blogging should pursue the truth. But when we end up with the terrible mess we have this evening, with a couple having to make public distressingly personal details, then we all have to examine our consciences.
There must be a better way of bringing politicians to account.

Firstly, Paul, I’m sorry to hear that you lived through the loss of your child. I can’t imagine anything worse so am glad you’ve come through the other side possessing a strong sense of empathy.
I thought you might mention this and I’m glad you did because, yes, surely there must be a better way of bringing politicians to account. There must be more to politics than sexuality even for the homophobes around us.
When I heard this ‘news item’ on the radio yesterday evening and took a guess at who the blogger was…. turns out I was right.
Why on earth does the ‘blogger’ you mention have so much influence? It’s absolutely baffling.
I do think he has very good contacts in Westminster and he is very knowledgeable about legal issues, plus he has a rather tenacious sense of following up gossip. It’s a bit depressing, but I suspect he is driven by a great sense of truth and justice.
Random thoughts is no order of merit.
1) A politician is allowed to be gay without ridicule.
While I regret the substance behind the trying for a baby story, it seems like typical spin to me.
2) It seems to me that the media and it’s audience is only concerned if they are, or not, having a fling. Sad.
3) If WH is not gay, then he should say so in those words, but only if he is not.
4) Has WH and other ministers shared rooms on business; is it common practice?
5) Would ministers share a room with a member of the opposite sex; I doubt it.
6) Was WH £30k adviser performing a ‘real’ role. He seems rather young.
7) If WH is/was having fling, then he has been utterly stupid doing it this way.
9) Paddy ‘Pantsdown’ has shown the way to deal with ‘scandal’. be brutally and immediately honest.
Bearing in mind William Hague has been earning up to £2 million in the last five or so years, I cannot see why he has to share a hotel room. The last time I had to share a room on work business was about 20 years ago. With hotel rooms available at around £60 a night, it just isn’t necessary to share these days.
