Trivia quiz – three music folks seemingly unconnected, and a two times British PM with no mandate
Tweet
One politics, one music question. Will Howells will get both straight away.
1. Politics
Which British Prime Minister was in Number Ten (as PM) for two full terms but never received the majority mandate of the British electorate?
2. Music
What do the rock band C.C.S, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy and tune meister Paul Hardcastle have in common?
Please try answers in the comments. Then I’ll confirm the answers at the same time tomorrow. Thanks for your involvement!

2. All composed TotP theme arrangements.
No clue on the music question, but depending on what you mean by ‘majority mandate’, there’s a case for saying Winston Churchill on the PM question, as he took over from Chamberlain in wartime and then in 1951 became PM again with a majority of seats, but with Labour getting more votes. Also a case for saying Asquith, who didn’t win an overall Liberal majority in either election in 1910.
Methinks ToTP theme tunes. CCS and their version of Whole Lotta Love began the show when I watched it. Phil Lynott penned some god awful tune in the mid 70s for it and Paul Hardcastle replaced that with something equally unmemorable. So long TOTP!
Not sure about two full terms but the first PM to hold office with a full mandate in modern times was Ramsey MacDonald. Despite winning 67 fewer seats than the Tories, Ramsay Mac was asked by the King to form a government in 1917. It only lasted a few months. Following the election in May 1929, Labour was back in office, albeit still as a minority administration. MacDonald was again Prime Minister.
