Unrepaired potholes don’t go away – they just get bigger

On 18th January I reported eight local potholes to West Berkshire Council. I had log numbers given to me, and a promise that the problem statements would be passed to the Highways Maintenance team. One of the eight received attention, but with the others – nothing happened – except that the potholes got bigger. I complained again on 11th February. Still no action. So I have complained again today about the same potholes.

It is quite staggering how this delay of six weeks (on all but one of the eight reported potholes) has meant that the potholes have just got bigger and worse – making their repair even more expensive.

For example, on January 18th the problem in Queens road, Newbury which I reported was four-five small potholes and a series of cracked depressions around them. Now, there are ten potholes, several of them large, complete with screeds of gravel strewn around on the road and pavement. Just look at my photos of the situation below. On the left are the potholes on 21st February and on the right are the same potholes today. In just seven days the potholes have grown considerably bigger!

Update 2nd March: Three of the large potholes here have now been filled. Several small ones remain, plus several other large ones in the East Fields area, two of which I reported to the council as long ago as 18th January.

The ability to not mince one's words is highly prized here and, when combined with the ability to profane without insulting the reader's intelligence, is excellent.
